On Cybertron, Optimus Prime is prepared by robed priests of Primus for an unprecedented experiment -- to reach a resonance between himself, the planet and the Autobot Creation Matrix, to amplify his psychic abilities and learn about the mysterious visions he's been seeing. Despite the warnings from the head priest, Optimus proceeds, and soon becomes one with the Matrix...
Elsewhere in the galaxy, on a planet in the midst of Decepticon colonization, Lord Jhiaxus waits for the Autobots to attack. He is angered when they do not appear, and he wonders what Optimus is up to. At the same time, on their current asteroid base, the Autobots hone their fighting skills with wargames and training. Hot Rod chafes at not fighting the Decepticons, while Kup wonders about how all Transformers were supposedly created at the same time.
Optimus' visions take him to the early days of Cybertron. He sees the creation of the first Transformers, mechanoids created by Primus from the surface of the planet itself. But then Optimus learns of another way to create Transformers -- by bio-morphic reproduction, where a Cybertronian reproduces by a painful process of budding. He also learns that the Transformers were eventually made to forget this process, to avoid overpopulation and the diluting of their role as guardians of life.
Optimus then realizes that this is how Jhiaxus amassed his legion of Decepticons -- once the empirical Decepticons had left Cybertron millions ofyears ago, they had rediscovered the process, and used it to further their numbers. Unfortunately, because the life-protecting design of Primus had been diluted past its limits, this new generation of Transformers has turned into a destructive force, focused solely on expansion. Enraged, Optimus snaps out of his trance and begins making plans to stop Jhiaxus.
Unfortunately, Optimus awoke too soon. He missed the conclusion of the vision, where continued reproduction of the Transformers also begins to release a mysterious dark energy. Over time, enough of this energy clustered together to form a tangible mass, which then drifted off into space...
