Resumen:

As they travel to Earth, the Headmasters reconstruct Fortress Maximus into a larger, more powerful body -- Galen now transforms into the head of Cerebros, who becomes Fort Max's head.

On Earth, Spike Witwicky arrives home to find that his father's house and garage are destroyed (last issue). Sparkplug has been rescued, however, and briefs Spike on recent events. Unconvinced that the Autobots are their friends, Spike rushes to Mt. St. Hillary to find Buster. He finds the abandoned Ark cave, along with the various Autobot equipment and a crushed toy car (Goldbug's body).

The Autobots arrive in Earth space, and the Headmasters track the transceiver signal to the cave at Mt. St. Hillary. As Spike hides, Chromedome follows a faint radio signal to find Goldbug. Chromedome plugs his circuitry into Goldbug's brain module, who sends images explaining what happened. The Autobots learn about recent events, and "see" Ratbat carry off Buster Witwicky (following events from last issue). Fortress Maximus is worried about the missing Autobots, but shows no sympathy for Buster. Angry, Spike reveals himself to the Headmasters and challenges them. Galen reveals himself to Spike, but remains indifferent to Buster's predicament, and then the Autobots leave to pursue Ratbat's trail.

Spike spends the night in the cave. The next morning, Scorponok and his Decepticons arrive in Earth orbit, and the Decepticon Headmasters also follow the signal to the cave. Spike sees them and concludes that they aren't friendly; to warn the Autobots, he slams into the transmitter's replay button. Mindwipe detects the message, and the Decepticons hunt for Spike.

Sensing the signal, the Autobot Headmasters presume that some Autobots have returned. They reach the cave just as the Decepticons have Spike cornered, and quickly rescue him. Scorponok realizes that Fort Max's new body gives the Autobots an advantage, so he chases after Spike instead. Fort Max follows, but the small size of the caves forces the Headmasters to abandon their bodies.

Eventually, in a room full of lava, Spike watches as Galen and Lord Zarak confront each other on a narrow rock bridge. As they fight, Zarak commands Scorponok's body to blast the roof over Spike's head. Galen pushes Spike to safety, and is himself crushed. Victorious, Zarak leaves to lead the other Decepticons against the Autobots. With his dying breath, Galen apologizes for his earlier indifference, then gives Spike his control helmet.

Back in the main chamber, Scorponok is leading the Decepticons against the Autobot Headmasters when Fortress Maximus returns -- under Spike's control. With Fort Max's firepower, the Decepticons are quickly overwhelmed and quickly retreat, and then the Autobots flee Mt. St. Hillary before it erupts. As the Autobots reflect on the day's events, Hardhead suggests that Spike migh be qualified to be their new leader.
